Flesh or Spirit?

In Romans 7, Paul acknowledges there is a universal wrestle between living by the flesh and living by the Spirit.  Being a Christian doesn’t make us any more perfect than anyone else.    We all wrestle with sin.    In verse 19, Paul states “For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do – this I keep on doing.”

Question: What is it for you right now that you know you should do but you keep on doing the opposite?

There are all sorts of things that come at us in life to distract us and pull us to compromise on what God is asking of us.

The dream, the assignment given by God is not supposed to be accomplished in our own strength.  Let’s take a look at what happened to the apostles in Acts when the call of God was threatened.

Read Acts 5: 27-42  What I notice from this text is that there is always a God perspective, a God response, a God promise, a God position that He wants us to know about.

Firstly the apostles LIVED by the conviction that they must obey God rather than man.  Our flesh will always want to please man or avoid confrontation or go with what’s popular.  Sometimes we are so self protective we actually compromise on obedience to God.  Living out our convictions from God is more than just about talking the talk.  When we get a revelation of our convictions from God, we have the courage to obey when man brings opposition.

Question:  What are the convictions God has given you?

Secondly, the Holy Spirit is a witness to the convictions of God.  Without the Holy Spirit, there is no obedience.  Without obedience, there is no Holy Spirit. (v32)  If we want to be people of the Spirit, seeing and hearing what God is doing, we need the witness of the Holy Spirit.  The testimony of our lives by the Spirit, gives testimony to the God of our lives.  We must never underestimate the help of the Holy Spirit when it comes to living by the Spirit.

Question: What importance does the Holy Spirit have in your life?

Thirdly, if God is for us, who can be against us.  Although we may face opposition and struggle, the reality is, what God starts in our lives, He will finish.  No man can stop what God wills.  Some of us need to know that God is for us.  Even if we have failed or do not feel worthy, God wants us to succeed.

How do we respond to this word? SURRENDER

In order to live by the Spirit, we must surrender to Him again.  Today, maybe you need  to surrender to Christ again and pick back up the call and conviction of your life.
