What Makes the Church the Church?

2 Corinthians 5:20 “We are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”

We are living in a culture of ignorance and disillusionment about the role of the church in the world. The Spirit of the culture is trying to drown out the voice of the church from having any impact within society. More and more people are seeing church as irrelevant and sadly some people within the church have added to the confusion and thus diluted the purpose and potency of the church.

The Church does not exist to reproduce the work of other agencies. There is a place for social justice, counseling and welfare support in the church but these are secondary to the preaching of the Gospel. The Church is the only body of people on the planet who are called to specialize in dealing with the spiritual problems of people’s lives and the only voice on the planet that calls everyone to be reconciled to God.

Some people argue that different methods and techniques in the church are required to engage with people today because the conditions we are living in have changed. Technology might have changed, culture might have changed but God and man at the core hasn’t changed. God’s still God and man’s issues are still man’s issues. Man needs to be reconciled to God. That’s why there is no substitute for the centrality of preaching of the gospel in the local church.

Western culture is so individualistic and and this has crept into the church. Many people justify their personal pursuit of God to be a reason for forsaking coming together with other believers and being the church. Jesus said, “Where two or three are gathered in my name there am I in the midst of them.” There is something that happens when God’s people come together that no amount of individual reading or watching Christian TV can measure up to. When we gather together Christ is actually present and there is a power and a spiritual dynamic at work that doesn’t exist in any other setting.

Powerful and authentic Gospel preaching is needed more than ever before because the times are more desperate than ever before. People need to hear the truth and they need to be reconciled to God. Preaching the Gospel was the vehicle for declaring this in Jesus ministry, as well as in the early church and it still is today. Where Gospel preaching is lacking there you will see a decrease in the potency and fruitfulness of a local church.
