Be Yourself – LG Study!

1270814655_4d45ae7387Introduction: Read John 3:22-30

Many teenagers growing up suffer from insecurities in their personal identity. If these insecurities aren’t arrested they are carried into the adolescent years and affect every area of life including relationships, career and finances.

David McCracken makes an excellent comment about security in our identity. He says, “Security is the mark of a revelation of God as Abba Father.” When you know in your heart that God is your Father you can step out in faith and accomplish all that God has called you to do. Without a revelation of who we are in Christ and who created us we will suffer from insecurity and start to live life through the lens of other’s opinions of us.

John the Baptist

John’s disciples came to their leader with news of Jesus exploding ministry and tried to force his hand to do something about it. If John had been insecure in his identity and his calling then he would have reacted with jealousy, comparison and competition.

Instead, John responded with incredible security and showed his disciples and us how we can be ourselves – nothing more, nothing less. Here are some of the keys found in this passage that we need to action in our lives:

  1. Know who you are in Christ (v28): Discuss what it means to be in Christ and where being in Christ begins.
  2. Know what God has called you to do and what he hasn’t called you to do (V28): Read John 1:6-8 and reflect on what John’s calling was. What is a calling and do you know what God has called you to do?
  3. Be secure in God when someone else succeeds (v26): How do you respond when someone close to you succeeds in an area that’s close to your heart? Read 1 Corinthians 12:26 – How are we to respond when others around us succeeds?
  4. Rest in God’s sovereignty (v27): What is God’s sovereignty? Where are you not at rest in your life right now?
  5. Find your greatest joy in making Jesus famous (v29-30): Where do you find your greatest joy in life? What does it mean for Christ to increase and you and I to decrease?

  1. when you say we need to know who we are in christ…well who are we, are we his servents or are we who we are, like our own personality? if that makes sense.

    thanks. 🙂

      Hi Sonja,

I’m talking about having your identity in who Christ is and what he has done for you on the cross. I am not talking about having your identity in possessions, performance or personality alone. We are to celebrate the personality, strengths and passions God has given us but we are to primarily live out of what Christ has done for us and who he has made us to be.
