Overcoming Hyperactivity!

The great pioneer

missionary William Carey once said he would rather burn out for Jesus than rust out! It sounds really saintly and noble but in practice has a catastrophic effect on you, your relationships and your work.

Not to diminish in any way Carey’s contribution to the kingdom of God, i think it’s important we reflect upon the sustainablity of our efforts to advance God’s kingdom.

I have read several reports of some of the greatest men of God throughout history including John Wesley, William Carey, C.T. Studd and several others who all suffered in their personal lives because of the incredible load of ministry they carried. One suffered marital breakdown, one contributed to their wife experiencing continual psychotic episodes and one burned out so many people around him that his entire missionary organisation would have been compromised had he not died.

Each of these men made incredible contributions  to the salvation of lost people in pivotal times of history but we need to take a lesson out of their testimonies and that is God doesn’t need us to burn out to be effective in what he’s called us to do. Work hard, YES! Be busy..sometimes YES! But burn out…NO! We’re all busy in the 21st century, the issue is busy doing what?

Collateral damage does not need to be the norm for global changing ministries or everyday Christians seeking to make a difference in the lives of people around them. If you are overloaded at this stage of the year. Here are some tips to help you climb out of the hyperactivity pit:

  • Clarify your priorities
  • Set basic limits
  • Share the load
  • Exercise regularly
  • Establish consistent sleep patterns
  • Renew your soul with prayer and God’s word
  • Make time for the things that fill your cup full
