Recommended Books!

Recently i have read some outstanding books i think you should have a look at:

Intelligent Church – Steve Chalk

This book explores the vital need of the church to connect the Bible with 21st century culture in an effective way. Very provocative reading.

The Visionary’s Handbook – Watts, Taylor and Means

This provocative book looks at the paradox of vision, time, value, leadership, competition and much more and turns all of the popular thinking about these concepts on their head and challenges you to go deeper in your thinking. Very applicable reading!

The Pioneer Spirit – Mal Fletcher

Mal helps us to reconnect to our pioneering roots as the Church and re-engage with popular culture. His word is a prophetic call to design the future and creatively innovate the gospel in compelling ways with the current generation.

Outliers: The story of success – Malcolm Gladwell

If you haven’t read any of Malcolm’s books, you better catch up. This guy has written international best sellers including, “Blink” and “Tipping Point”. He looks at the world through a different lens and communicates timeless truths in ways that compel you to action.

One Church

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on December 30, 2008 by Corey Turner #ironprophet

Ephesians 4:4 says, “There is one body and one Spirit – just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call – one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”

Count how many times the Apostle Paul uses the words ‘one’ in this passage…I think God is trying to make a point. We are supposed to be representative’s of the oneness of God and be one church.

I have struggled at times with how to bridge the gap between churches in my own region when we all come from differing theological perspectives and rituals. Despite our differences we have many points of unity (as outlined in this passage) including one Jesus Christ who died on the cross for our salvation.

We must be willing to climb over the spiritual walls we have erected around ourselves and make ourselves vulnerable to our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ and agree to work together to build God’s kingdom across the earth. Recently i heard of a pastor who initiated a concept called ‘ONE PRAYER’ . He invited pastors from around the world to answer the question: If there was one prayer you could pray for the church what would it be?

The response was incredible! 14,000 pastor’s from around the world chose to participate in answering that question for their own local congregations and during a 4 week period in 2008 all 14,000 churches preached a series in their churches called ‘One Prayer’ and allowed pastors from other congregations to preach in their pulpits the answer to that question. At the end of the 4 week series all the churches took up an offering for church plants and put it towards the planting of 500 churches across the world.

WOW! This is a revolutionary idea that worked in one part of the Body of Christ and similar ideas like it can work in your region as well. Pull down the walls you’ve created that isolates you from other Christians and churches in your area and reach out to them building this one church Jesus called us to be.

Whispers

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on December 29, 2008 by Corey Turner #ironprophet

In 1 Samuel 3:1-10 we read the story of God speaking to Samuel when he was a little boy serving Eli in the temple. God called Samuel 3 times and each time Samuel thought that Eli, his teacher, was calling him and so Samuel would run to Eli and ask what he wanted.

On the 3rd time that Samuel went to Eli, Eli perceived that God was speaking to Samuel and instructed him to respond to God’s call with, “Speak Lord for your servant hears.” The 4th time God calls Samuel, Samuel responds to God as instructed and what God spoke to Samuel shaped his life and the future of Israel.

This true story emphasises the desire and capacity of God to speak to us. While there are lots of ways God can speak to us, by far the most common way God speaks to us, both throughout scripture and my own life, is through ‘whispers’.

The whispers of God have shaped my life and ministry more than anything else. I started Activate Church because of a whisper. I have a son named ‘Joshua’ because of a whisper. Our church received $10,000 to purchase a truck to transport equipment around because of a whisper. I ran from Sydney to Melbourne (Run Pastor Run) and our church raised over $100,000 because of a whisper.

When any of us stop long enough to be still and know that he is God, God’s spirit will whisper profound and dangerous words that if we have the courage to heed will not only alter our lives but the lives of many others as well.

If you truly want your life to be extraordinary build your relationship with God and tune in your spiritual frequency amidst the hustle and bustle of life to God’s whispers and watch what God does through you.

BHAG’s

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on December 28, 2008 by Corey Turner #ironprophet

Recently i have been challenged by one of my ‘thorns in the flesh’ (this is someone who constantly provokes you to grow) to clarify my BHAGS for the coming year and beyond. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard the phrase “BHAG’s” before but it stands for “BIG HAIRY AUDACIOUS GOALS”.

I’m quite a goal oriented type person and so i generally relish this exercise and it’s a good time of year to do so (a little tip – New year’s resolutions don’t work, go for BHAG’s). BHAG’s force you to get serious about achieving them or else you’re best leaving them alone. You can’t accomplish a BHAG without lots of massive action because they are hairy and require tons of audacity.

Here are some of my BHAGS for the coming years:

  1. My 3 kids loving Jesus wholeheartedly and serving him fervently
  2. Lead a world changing church of 10,000 people min.
  3. Author a best selling book
  4. Top 10 podcast list for at least 12 months (See itunes)
  5. Activate Churches in every state capital city across Australia
  6. Full capacity & energy at 90 years of age

These are some of my BHAGS. What about yours? Don’t go into another year directionless and in cruise mode but get clarity on your BHAGS and get busy making them become reality because life is too important to waste.

Follow that trail!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , on December 27, 2008 by Corey Turner #ironprophet

One of the things i enjoy about going away on holidays is going for a run in foreign locations and exploring the sights and sounds of a new environment. Often when running in a place i am not familiar with i will come across various walking tracks or trails that take my curiosity and compel me to run down them. Sometimes i run along it for a while and come to a dead end but most of the time running down the new trail reveals new sounds and breathtaking sights. Different trails take you to different places and give you different experiences.

We can have a similar experience spiritually. Week after week we hear sermons, read the bible, listen to podcasts, discuss spiritual issues with fellow believers and share our faith in Jesus with others. In other words we’re running the race of faith and during the run God takes something we’ve just heard or observed and it sets off a train of thought in our minds or a deep processing of the heart.

These seminal moments are God’s divine invitations to follow a trail into new spiritual experiences and theological conclusions that will transform your life. Some of these trails seem risky, even dangerous but they call you and beckon you to run down them because you sense that what is at the end of the trail is worth the journey.

The greatest spiritual growth in my life has come out of following these holy trails of thought than almost anything else in my spiritual experience. It’s not often what the preacher is saying that changes you, it’s what God is saying behind what the preacher is saying that transforms you.

Ignore these trails at your own peril. Don’t ignore that pesty thought or idea that keeps coming up in your mind as you are listening to a sermon or reading the word. This is either God’s invitation to abundant life or the devils distraction to a destructive life.

God often does his best work along these trails so let your curiosity get the better of you and follow that trail.

You are God-like!

In Genesis 1:3-4 it says, “And God said, “Let there be light” and there was light. and God saw that the light was good.” In this passage of scripture we read where God created light through the spoken word and he then saw the evidence of what he spoke in his reality.

To build upon this it says in Genesis 1:26-28 “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over…So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them…And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the earth…”

Because you have been created in the image of God you have the power to create your reality through the words you speak out of your mouth. Just as God spoke and saw what he spoke in existence, you and i can speak and see what we speak in our everyday reality.

If you’ve ever doubted your capacity to make a positive & productive contribution to the world, stop doubting. You were created to be fruitful and multiply.

If you’ve ever doubted your power as a person, stop doubting. You were created to exercise dominion (authority) over the environment of this earth. God has called you to a sphere of life that you are supposed to exercise influence in.

Stop putting yourself down and stop limiting yourself with false beliefs about who you really are. You are God-like and you’ve been created to succeed despite the fall of your human nature. Jesus has restored to you through the cross everything you need to reclaim God’s original mandate for your life.
