What WORD are you living by?

In my devotions this morning i read in Deuteronomy 8:3 “Man does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” God spoke these words to Israel to remind them that no matter what they faced in the wilderness their strength and direction did not come from their own ability to provide for themselves or their own wisdom but from God’s Word.

It’s so easy to live by other people’s words for our lives and let them shape the way we think about ourselves, thus shaping the way we behave and interact with our circumstances. It’s so easy to live by the words of the media and what popular opinion says about the state of the world and what’s most important.

We have to make an intentional decision to live by God’s word over and above all the other words in our lives. We have to consciously position ourselves to receive of God’s living word everyday. We have to posture our hearts to store up the word of God in our hearts. Life’s pressure’s ultimately reveal what’s been stored up in our hearts, other’s words or God’s word.

There is also another truth to this passage and that is, God’s word isn’t static but it’s dynamic. God’s word is rhema as much as it’s logos and God has a word for you today, not just 10 years ago or last year or last month. What is God saying to you today?

I encourage you to examine the words that you are living by and if they are anything other than what God says about you then change it. You don’t live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
